Title of the Program: Workshop on Formalization of informality in the construction sector

Workshop objectives: The overall objective of this workshop to reach out and engage about 25-30 persons of managerial positions engaged in construction firms to sensitize them on the issues of prevailing informality in construction sector and how to bring forth the process of formalization within the sector

Organized by: Bangladesh Employers Federation (BEF) in collaboration with ILO country office for Dhaka

Venue: Conference room of RCCI, Chamber building, Rajshahi Chamber of Commerce & Industry (RCCI), Ghoramara, Rajshahi-1000.

Discussion:

Participants were engaged in lively discussion on various aspects of informality, possible ways to mitigate them, steps towards formalization, and challenges related to compliance with the legal provisions. For example, the registration requirements for contractors supplying casual laborers were deemed to be challenging, according to the six contractors present in the workshop.

Resource person: A qualified resource person, Mr. Syed Latif Hossain conducted the workshop. He made two presentations, the first on the characteristics and elements of informality, and the salient features of informality prevailing in the construction sector of Bangladesh; and the second one on the legal provisions as stipulated in the Rules framed under Bangladesh Labour Act 2006. Also Mr. Joha Jamilur Rahman, Training coordinator, BEF act as workshop coordinator and provide support based on demand of resource person and participants.

Conclusion: In conclusion, Participants expressed their positive feedback that they would make some contributions at their workplaces by using gathered knowledge.
